The best lipstick colors for over 60 women isn’t as narrow a choice as it used to be. I remember watching my mother apply the same red lipstick day in and day out.

She put it on in a way that made the actual lipstick flat, not swirled the way some women did.

I wanted to wear lipstick too, but the best I could negotiate was a clear lipgloss. Those were the days when the Avon lady would stop by the house with a pack of tiny lipstick samples on a Saturday morning.

There were a lot of different shades, but I’m sure they weren’t formulated the way they are today.

If the Avon lady stopped by my house today I’m sure she’d have a lipstick with a moisturing formula, matte lipstick, or something with a lustrous finish.

Our makeup preferences change as our skin changes

Mature women can benefit from understanding what lipstick formulas, shades, and textures enhance their natural beauty. It’s important to consider factors like fine lines, lip texture, and undertones.

I’ve noticed that my lips tend to get drier than they used to. They’re thinner than they used to be and the lipstick seems to bleed into the fine lines around my mouth.

I wish I was brave enough to wear a bright red lipstick shade (my favorite). But, the reality is that I’d feel weird. Other older women can pull it off, but I can’t. I’m happy with pink lip stains or a creamy lip gloss.

How to apply lipstick

You’re probably rolling your eyes wondering why anyone would tell you how to put on lipstick, right? It’s easy! Just smear it on and you’re good to go.

You might have gotten away with that in your 20’s or 30’s, but it might be time to look at lipstick application in a new light.

Use a sugar lip scrub

Sugar lip scrubs are a great (and tasty) way to exfoliate the dry skin from your lips. Lush has some good ones, but you can find them anywhere. My favorite is the Dermasuri Lip Exfoliator Scrub in coconot passion fruit flavor.

They’re easy to use. Just put a pea sized amount on your finger and gently massage over your lips for about 20 seconds. Afterwards, gently wipe away any excess with a tissue or damp cloth.

The best thing about this particular product is that you don’t have to apply additional lip balm afterwards. It has a moisture-locking formula packed with rich oils and antioxidants including jojoba oil, shea butter, and sunflower seed oil.

Apply a lip primer

Lip primers are similar to face primers. They’re specifically fromulated for the delicate skin of the lips. Their purpose is to fill in any lines or uneven textures, creating a smooth surface for lipstick application.

Choose the right lipstick colors for over 60 women

At this point in your life, you likely already have a few shades that you love. You can stick with the color lipstick you love, but it might be time to look for a new formula.

Look for lipstick with light-reflecting pigments. They help to create a soft, radiant shine that enhances the appearance of lip volume. The reflective quality also helps minimize the appearance of fine lines.

Matte vs. Glossy: Which Works Better for Mature Lips?

Matte lipsticks have long been a go-to for their intense color and staying power, but they can sometimes emphasize fine lines and dryness, especially on older lips.

To avoid this, look for matte formulas enriched with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or shea butter, which smooth and plump, creating a velvety but not overly dry look.

Glossy or creamy lipsticks, by contrast, can give lips a more youthful and fuller appearance. These formulas, often containing lip-loving ingredients like vitamin E or lip oils, reflect light and give lips a softer, more natural look.

For women over 60, a creamy lipstick or a high-shine finish can soften lip lines and provide a more forgiving texture. Ultimately, it’s all about personal preference and finding a balance that works for you.

Why not accessorize your lipstick?

I usually associate wearing lipstick with going out somewhere. It could be to the mall, or to a special event!

Choosing the Right Lipstick Shades for Mature Women

Selecting the best lipstick colors for over 60 women begins with understanding your undertone and preferred intensity.

To get you on the right track, visit stores with trained cosmeticians. The following stores offer top notch customer service with highly trained people who can help you narrow down your lipstick choices:

Tones to look for

Here’s a look at some top shades across warm, cool, and neutral undertones:

Lipstick Colors for Cool Undertones

Cool undertones (with blue or pink undertones in the skin) pair well with shades like raspberry, cool pink, and classic red with blue undertones.

These hues enhance fair skin and create a balanced, vibrant look. Soft pinks and berry tones are especially flattering on mature blondes and those with gray hair, adding a fresh pop of color without being overpowering.

Lipstick Colors for Warm Undertones

Women with warm skin tones or yellow undertones might opt for rich coral, warm reds, or earthy tones like terracotta.

These shades work beautifully with warmer skin undertones and complement dark hair. Warmer shades also pair well with neutral eye and blush colors, creating a balanced, harmonious look that brings out the best in mature skin.

Lipstick Colors for Neutral Undertones

Neutral undertones can wear a variety of shades, as they tend to suit both cool and warm hues. Deep rose, soft mauve, and peachy nude are all versatile choices that look great on neutral undertones. For a more vibrant look, try bold lip colors like cherry red or rich plum.
