I hear a lot of people over 60 (friends, family, etc.) say they’d rather have a small dog because they’re “easier”.
The reality is that some small dogs require just as much high intensity exercise and training as a much larger dog.
For example, I have a Parson Russell Terrier, Archie, weighing in at just 13 pounds.
He needs a minimum of 60 – 90 minutes of high intensity exercise and mental stimulation to be happy.
He needs a strong pack leader who can teach him how to be a calm assertive companion.

​The term “lifestyle” takes into consideration a number of things including activity level, work schedule, and home environment.
The best dogs for people over 60 may not be lapdogs!
Dogs need time, attention, and companionship. If you work long hours, you’ll need to ensure that someone can care for the dog during the day.
It’s also important to look at your living space.
I honestly don’t believe that smaller living spaces, like apartments, should limit the type of dog you get.
However, if your dog requires a lot of exercise and you don’t have a big yard, you’re going to have to get your dog outside, rain or shine, everyday for at least an hour (or more!).
AND, if you live in an apartment or condominium, you won’t be able to just open your door to let your dog relieve itself.
Unless you train your dog to go on a pee pad, you’ll need to make several trips outside.
Time Commitment
​There’s no question that dogs are a huge responsibility.
I’ve seen the results of people not exercising their dogs properly, neglecting early socialization, and skimming over behavioral training. The result is a disaster.
These are all things that are important to the happiness and wellbeing of a dog.

Some breeds are prone to certain health conditions.
For example, Bulldogs and Pugs often have respiratory issues due to their flat faces, while larger breeds like German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers may be prone to hip dysplasia.
Different breeds have different lifespans.
Smaller dogs generally live longer (e.g., Toy Poodles can live up to 15 years or more), while larger dogs may have shorter lives (e.g., Great Danes often live around 7-10 years).
Temperament

There’s no fooling a dog that needs a ton of exercise. That type of breed won’t get used to a quieter lifestyle.
Instead, the dog will dominate your home and you definitely don’t want that.
What I think about is the fact that I’m ageing. I can still keep up with my Parson Russell Terrier, but where will I be in 10 years. My little dog has a long lifespan. Will I be able to keep up this pace when I’m 70?
My point is simply to think about these things. Some dog breeds will mellow as they age, but they still need a fair bit of attention.
Financial Considerations
I’m sure you’re well aware that dogs need food, regular vet visits, spaying/neutering, grooming, training, potentially daycare or pet sitting services, bedding, toys, and supplied.
Factor in the cost of potential emergencies (surgeries, treatment for chronic conditions, etc.) and your wallet is suddenly empty.
I highly recommend getting pet insurance as soon as possible.
If you get a puppy with no health concerns, you can probably get a decently priced health insurance policy. If you wait, and your dog develops a health condition, your monthly insurance cost will likely be higher.

Allergies

Buy or Rescue?
There are plenty of dogs that are in need of a good home.
What I’m about to say may be a bit controversial, but I wanted to buy from a breeder simply because I wanted the chance to develop the dog’s personality and behavior from the puppy stage.
That said, I know many people who’ve successfully rescued dogs from shelters. The choice is yours!
