I’m not kidding when I say that I’ve been looking for the arch support sneakers for women over 50 for months. It was only after my physiotherapist recommended a local sporting good store that I was able to find a pair.

The trick, of course, is finding the perfect pair for you. The sneakers that work for me, may not fit the same on you.

I have an extremely high arch which means some shoes, even if they’re designed as sneakers for women over 50, just won’t work.

I learned my lesson the hard way

I wore shoes with little to no support all last summer. I had a pair of boat shoes with no arch support and a pair of Birkenstock’s that did nothing to support my heel.

There’s nothing wrong with the shoes, the problem is that they didn’t support my high arches. By the end of the summer, my feet paid the price. I wound up with plantar fascPain and more pain.

As a result of my bad shoe choices, I’ve been going to physiotherapy and an arthritis care clinic for months.

I only started to see an improvement after visiting a specific shoe store (on my physiotherapist’s recommendation) where they measured my feet, listened to my complaints, and found a shoe that would perfectly support my foot.

Here’s the thing about sneakers for women over 50

I would NEVER have chosen the shoe they dug out for me. It was (what I thought) two sizes bigger than I would normally fit into. I didn’t even like the look of them to be honest. But once those sneakers were on my feet, I knew they were the ones.

The sneaker, by the way, is a Saucony Tempus Wide. I only use them for walking (I’m not a runner), and I love them. They allow my toes to splay naturally and not be cramped in the shoe. In addition, they pull my stance back slightly so that my weight is more evenly distributed.

My takeway from the experience was that:

a) Your feet change as you get older

b) It’s a good idea to let an shoe fitting expert guide you to your next paid

c) Sometimes the best walking shoes are sneakers you never thought you’d wear in a million years.

Be open to trying shoes you’ve never considered before, no matter what they look like. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Hey, I’m not saying you have to settle for thick, black, velcroed sneakers. These days, there are a lot of great looking functional, orthotic-friendly shoes that won’t make you look like you shop at Forever 81.

Why the Right Sneakers for Women Over 50 Matter

I’m not here to preach about the benefits of an active lifestyle. However, I think we all know by now how important it is for physical health and mental well-being.

I’m not an athlete or a “gym rat” by any means. I do, however, appreciate the ability to move my body. I walk my dog a lot, I engage in light weight lifting, and I don’t have a car which means I get around by walking most places.

I quickly discovered that when my feet hurt so badly that it was difficult to walk, my mental health took a steep dive. That’s how important it is to look after your feet, especially as we age.

Finding the right pair of sneakers is crucial for comfort and support, especially for those dealing with common foot problems like plantar fasciitis or flat feet.

Let’s Find You The Right Shoe

When it comes to choosing athletic shoes for everyday wear, a few key factors come into play. Arch support and a cushioned insole are essential for preventing discomfort during long periods of time on your feet.

Women over 50 often experience changes in their foot structure, such as wider widths or higher arches, making it necessary to select supportive shoes that cater to these needs.

Of course, it’s one thing to have that information and another to walk into a shoe store with walls of options.

My shoe shopping ordeal

Let me help you clear away the clutter on your shoe shopping experience. I’m 57 years old and I don’t want my shoes to look like I bought them at Forever 81.

I’ve done a ton of research so that I could finally find the best shoes to fit my high arches. What I found were some great sandals and shoes that fit my feet like a glove.

Features to Look for In Sneakers For Women Over 50

The following are suggestions on how to find the best sneaker for you. Ultimately, you may need the advice of an orthopedist or physiotherapist who can first diagnose your foot problems.

Once you know precisely what’s “wrong” with your feet, you can take that information to shoe-fitting specialists. Knowledge is everything when shopping for shoes and sneakers.

The following are general guidelines.

We are all individuals with unique needs and fit. That’s why I mentioned getting some feedback on your specific feet. Are they wide? Narrow? Average width? Is one size foot slightly bigger than the other? Do you have flat feet? High arches (cavus foot)?

If you take this information into a store with sales people who know their stuff, you should have no problem finding the best sneakers for you!

Here are some examples of features to look for in sneakers for women over 50.

Cushioning and Support

Look for sneakers with soft cushioning and shock absorption features. This will provide extra support, especially for those with specific foot conditions or who are older runners.

Breathable Mesh Upper

mesh upper allows for airflow, keeping your feet cool and comfortable. This is particularly beneficial for women with wide feet or those needing a comfortable fit for long days.

Versatile Design

Opt for sneakers that transition well from casual wear to more athletic activities. A great choice for everyday wear can be a leather sneaker or a stylish platform sneaker that complements various outfits.

Orthotic-Friendly Sneakers

When buying a new paid of sneakers, make sure that you can remove the insole that comes with the shoe. This is so that you can insert a pair of orthotics without compromising the shoe fit.

Slip-On Shoes

For added convenience, consider slip-on shoes that make it easy to put on and take off. These can be particularly appealing for those with busy lifestyles or who frequently engage in short runs.

These can be a good choice (depending on your foot type) for people with mobility issues or bad backs.

Stability Shoes for People With Flat Feet

Stability shoes are a type of athletic shoe designed to provide extra support and reduce excessive foot movement, particularly for people who overpronate.

Overpronation occurs when the foot rolls too far inward as it strikes the ground, which can lead to foot, knee, and even back pain over time.

Stability shoes aim to correct this by offering a combination of cushioning, arch support, and structural elements to guide the foot into a more neutral position during walking or running.

Neutral Cushioned Shoes for People With High Arches

People with high arches tend to underpronate (also called supination).

Underpronation occurs when the foot rolls outward or doesn’t roll inward enough after landing, placing more pressure on the outer edges of the foot during walking or running.

This is common in individuals with high arches because the foot is more rigid and lacks the flexibility to absorb shock effectively.
