The only thing harder than choosing the first wedding dress is picking out second wedding dresses for over 50 brides. I know because I’ve done it.

It was strange because the dresses I wouldn’t have looked twice at in my younger years suddenly looked perfectly acceptable to me. Why? Because I’ve changed. We’ve changed!

At this point in our lives we’re generally free from societal expectations. In other words, we do (and wear) what we want. It shouldn’t be any different for your wedding day.

Finding the right dress is about your personal style and comfort. Don’t worry, I’ve got plenty of tips for you in this blog post. By the time you’ve finished reading, yo should feel less confused about second-time wedding dresses and more inspired!

What’s Different About a Second Wedding Dress?

A second wedding dresses isn’t necessarily different in style, although it can be. The difference is how older brides wear their dresses.

The naive young bride of long ago has been replaced with a much more worldly, confident woman. That makes all the difference in the world.

A second wedding, whether it’s a vow renewal or a second marriage, isn’t about following tradition. It’s more about honoring who you’ve become and who you’ve chosen to spend the rest of your life with.

Yes, the actual dress you choose may be different from a traditonal wedding gown. I say leave the bridal gowns to the younger women! But that’s just my opinion.

Choosing The Best Second Wedding Dresses For Over 50 Brides

When shopping for a second marriage wedding dress, the most important thing is feeling comfortable and confident in what you wear. My personal rule of thumb for any clothes or footwear is that if it doesn’t feel good the minute I put it in, it goes back on the rack.

You’ll know which dress is right for you the minute you put it on. Use the tips in this post to help narrow down your search. It will save you time and energy that you could be using somewhere else!

Consider Your Body Shape

Choosing the right second wedding dress is all about finding a style that flatters your unique body shape. Whether you want something classic or modern, the right silhouette will enhance your natural features and make you feel beautiful on your special day.

Apple

If you tend to carry weight around your midsection, an A-line silhouette is a great pick! It flows beautifully over your waist, giving you a balanced and flattering look. Pair it with a sweetheart neckline to highlight your bust and add a soft, romantic touch that naturally draws the eye upward.

Pear

For those with a pear-shaped body, meaning wider hips and a smaller upper body, an A-line silhouette can help balance proportions. Other great options include dresses with an empire waist, off-the-shoulder styles, and (in some cases) a well-structured fit and flare can be flattering.

Hourglass

If you’ve got an hourglass figure with a defined waist, go for dresses that show off your natural curves. A sweetheart neckline is a great choice because it highlights your bust while flattering your shape. Look for a fitted bodice with a softly flared skirt to keep things balanced and elegant.

Rectangle

For those with a straight, athletic frame, an A-line silhouette can add soft curves and movement to your look. To create the illusion of more shape, opt for dresses with defined waistlines and textured details. A high neckline offers an elegant look while keeping the style modern and sophisticated.

Choosing The Perfect Color

I’m pretty sure there used to be a “rule” about not wearing white for a second-wedding. That might still be true in more conservative communities, but I think it’s a rule worth breaking, especially if you’ve found the perfect dress.

That said, older women who also happen to be second-time brides seem to lean towards the following shades:

  • Pastel shades (blush, champagne, light blue, etc.)
  • Blush gown (which is a modern, romantic take on traditional white)
  • Rose gold
  • Darker colors if the wedding is in the winter

The other thing to consider when shopping for a wedding dress is your skin tone. If you haven’t had a personal colour analysis yet, now’s the time!

Dress Length

When choosing a second wedding dress, the length really depends on your vibe and the kind of party you’re having.

Tea Length (Short)

If you want to dance the night away without tripping over fabric, a short or tea length dress is a good option.

Hight-Low Style

A nice balance between a formal gown and a medium length dress is the high-low style. This type of versatile dress is cut higher in the front and longer in the back.

The hemline is asymmetrical, giving an elongated effect that is flattering for most body types.

Long (Formal or Casual)

Long wedding dresses don’t have to be stuffy. A destination wedding (I’m thinking a hot, sunny location) is a great place to wear a long wedding gown, especially if the material is light and airy.

Sleeve Type

Sleeve type is important, but it shouldn’t be a deal breaker on a dress you really love. For example, a good tailor can add sleeves to suit your preference.

Sheer lace sleeves, for example, can be sewn into your gown for a refined and elegant look.

It can also go the other way around where a good tailor can remove sleeves from a dress.

Budget Friendly and Wear-It-Againable

I know many people, myself included, who paid thousands for their first dress.

They wore it once then had it sealed into a plastic bag, never to be worn again. Some people, of course, sell their dresses or hand them down to future generations.

Personally, I like the idea of buying a second-wedding dress that you can use again.

If you’re planning a vow renewal or a casual wedding, a little white dress can be a stylish alternative. Accessorize with elegant earrings, a statement necklace, lace, tulle, and beautiful shoes.
